I sent XRP and the recipient says it never arrived
An XRP payment settles in seconds. If it succeeded, the XRP is at the address it was sent to, whoever owns it. The question is whether that is the address the recipient is looking at.
How it shows up
- I sent XRP to my friend and he says he never got it
- I sent XRP to my other wallet and it is not there
- The payment says completed but the recipient has nothing
- I sent XRP to my Xaman or Ledger wallet and it does not show
Support can resolve this in chat
Follow the steps below; the support agent can walk you through them.
Check it yourself
- Search the transaction hash, from the payment's receipt in Activity on xrpscan.com and compare its Result and Destination with the address it should have reached.
- If it says the transaction was not found, read "The payment is not on the ledger" below.
- If the Result says tecNO_DST_INSUF_XRP, read "The recipient's account was not activated" below.
- If the Result says anything else other than tesSUCCESS, read "A payment fails with a generic error".
- If the Result says tesSUCCESS and the Destination is that address, read "It arrived" below.
- If the Result says tesSUCCESS and the Destination is a different address, read "It went to a different address" below.
Have this ready if you contact support
- The transaction hash, from the payment's receipt in Activity
- The address the payment should have reached
What is going on
A successful payment on the XRP Ledger is final within seconds, and anyone can look it up by its transaction hash. If it succeeded, the XRP is at the address it was sent to. When the recipient does not see it, they are usually looking at a different wallet or account, or the payment went to a different address than the one they gave you.
It arrived
The XRP Ledger shows the payment arrived at that address. The payment is complete. If the recipient does not see it, they may be looking at a different wallet or account, or their app may need refreshing. If the address belongs to an exchange, it also needs the destination tag the exchange gave: see I sent XRP to an exchange and it never arrived. You can send them the transaction hash: they can look it up on xrpscan.com.
It went to a different address
The XRP Ledger shows this payment went to a different address. Compare the two character by character. If the other address is also the recipient's, the XRP is there. If not, only the owner of that address can send it back: see I sent funds to the wrong network or the wrong address.
The recipient's account was not activated
The address you sent to had never been activated, and the first payment to a new XRP Ledger account must be at least 1 XRP. The ledger refused this one, so nothing left your wallet except the tiny network fee. Send 1 XRP or more to activate it.
The payment is not on the ledger
The XRP Ledger has no payment with that hash. Check that you copied the whole hash from the payment's receipt in Activity. If Activity shows no such payment, it never went out: see A payment fails with a generic error.
A payment fails with a generic error
An XRP payment on the XRP Ledger fails for one of a few ledger rules: the destination is new and needs 1 XRP, it requires a destination tag, or the payment would dip into your reserve. Other tokens and sends to other networks go through NEAR Intents instead and fail for different reasons.
I sent funds to the wrong network or the wrong address
Blockchain transfers cannot be reversed by anyone. Whether anything can be done depends on where the funds actually went, so this page walks through the cases.
